Do you need to call friends, family or customers overseas?
Not a problem – MIH VoIP can handle international calls for you.

To protect our customers from fraud and surprise bills, international calls are disabled by default on every MIH VoIP account. When you genuinely need to call abroad, we can enable this safely and explain exactly how the charges work, so you stay in control.

How international calls work with MIH VoIP

Your MIH VoIP line works just like a normal landline for calls within the UK, with bundles for UK landlines and mobiles depending on your chosen package.

International calls are separate from your inclusive UK allowance.

They are:

  • Charged at our standard international call rates
  • Billed per minute (or part minute), depending on the destination
  • Clearly itemised on your bill so you can see where every penny goes

Why we disable international calls by default

Sadly, international call fraud is very common in telecoms. A single compromised handset or unexpected dialler can run up a large bill in a short space of time.

To protect you, we:

  • Disable international calls on all new lines by default
  • Only enable them when you specifically request it
  • Can work with you to set sensible limits or monitoring if needed

This approach protects:

  • Residential customers from bill shock
  • Vulnerable users and those with carelines
  • Small businesses who can’t afford nasty surprises on their phone bill

Security first, flexibility when you need it.

How to enable international calls on your MIH VoIP line

If you need to make international calls, enabling them is easy.

Existing customers

  1. Contact the MIH VoIP team via our contact form
  2. We’ll explain how the charging works and answer any questions
  3. We then enable international calls and confirm once it’s active

New customers

When you’re placing an order for VoIP for Home or VoIP for Business, simply:

  • Mention that you’ll need to make international calls
  • Tell us roughly which countries you’ll be calling

We’ll set things up correctly from the start and make sure you understand any costs.

Using MIH VoIP while you’re abroad

You don’t always have to make an “international call” to stay in touch.

With the MIH VoIP App, you can make and receive calls on your UK landline number using WiFi or mobile data, even when you’re overseas. When using the VoIP app the call charges/bundles are the same as if you were in the UK, helping you avoid huge roaming call charges.

That means:

  • Call home from your hotel WiFi using your UK landline number
  • Answer business calls on your UK number from anywhere
  • No expensive roaming charges for calling UK numbers from abroad

Keeping control of your international call costs

A few simple habits can keep international calling affordable:

  • Use WiFi where possible
Especially when travelling, connect your VoIP App to a trusted WiFi network to avoid mobile data charges.
  • Check the number type
Some destinations have “special” or premium numberswhich are likely to cost more.
  • Use the VoIP App for UK calls while abroad
When abroad, using the VoIP App to call UK numbers can often be better value than making roaming calls from your mobile.

International Calls & The Big Switch Off 2027

The upcoming PSTN landline switch-off in 2027 means all traditional copper landlines will be replaced by digital services such as VoIP.

If you currently rely on your landline to speak to loved ones abroad or run a business with international clients, now is the ideal time to:

  • Move your landline to VoIP
  • Ask about international calling
  • Make sure any carelines or important services still work correctly

Q1. Are international calls enabled automatically on my MIH VoIP line?

No. International calls are disabled by default on all MIH VoIP accounts to protect customers from fraud and unexpected bills. If you need to call abroad, just contact us, and we’ll enable it for you.

Q2. Are international calls included in my monthly bundle?

Your inclusive bundles are designed around calls within the UK. International calls sit outside your standard allowance and are charged at our international call rates. We’re happy to go through these with you before you start.

Q3. How do I request international calls on my account?

Complete the contact form. Let us know which line(s) you want international calls on and which countries you’re likely to call. We’ll then confirm the details and enable it for you.

Q4. Can I use my MIH VoIP service to avoid roaming charges?

Yes. Using the MIH VoIP App over WiFi or mobile data lets you make and receive calls on your UK landline number as if you were in the UK, which can help you avoid expensive roaming call charges.

Q5. I only need to make one or two overseas calls – is it still worth enabling?

Absolutely. Even if you only need to make occasional international calls, we can temporarily enable the feature, explain the likely cost and help you keep control. If you don’t need it any more, speak to us and we can review it again.
