VoIP for Businesses or Charities – Professional Business Phone Systems
Modern businesses and charities no longer need restrictive landline phone systems.
A VoIP business phone system allows you to make and receive professional calls anywhere using your internet connection — with flexible setup, desk phones, mobile apps, and simple monthly pricing.

What is VoIP for Business?
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) allows your business to make and receive calls over the internet rather than traditional phone lines.
This means:
- No physical phone lines required
- Work from anywhere
- Use desk phones, mobile apps, or laptops
- Add or remove users instantly
- Keep your existing business number
- Professional features included as standard

What is a User (Extension)?
Think of a User as a modern-day telephone extension, but with much more flexibility.
Instead of being tied to a single desk phone, an MIH VoIP User can use their business extension across multiple compatible devices, including a desk phone, the VoIP App and Browser Phone.
Each User has their own internal extension number and can have their own voicemail and voicemail-to-email, and can normally connect to up to four devices.
This means you can make and receive business calls wherever you’re working, while still using your business telephone number.
How many Users (Extensions) do I need?
With MIH VoIP, the number of User licences also determines how many calls your business can make or receive at the same time, whether those calls are between your team internally or to and from external numbers.
1 User = up to 1 simultaneous call
2 Users = up to 2 simultaneous calls
3 Users = up to 3 simultaneous calls
4 Users = up to 4 simultaneous calls
…and so on — simply add more Users as your business needs them.
Each User can be connected to multiple compatible devices, such as a desk phone, VoIP App and Browser Phone. However, adding more devices to the same User doesn’t increase the number of simultaneous calls available.
Your system can grow and change with your business. Additional User licences can be added whenever you need them and are charged pro-rata for the remainder of that month.
If a User is no longer required, their licence can be removed at the end of the month, so you’re not paying for Users your business no longer needs.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to how many Users your business needs. We’ll help you work that out based on how your team works and how many simultaneous calls you’re likely to require.

Q: Can I use VoIP for my business if I work from home?
A: Yes. MIH VoIP works just as well for home-based businesses as it does for offices and other business premises. You can make and receive business calls using a desk phone, VoIP App, Browser Phone or other compatible devices.or laptops.
Q: Can I keep my existing business phone number?
A: Yes. In most cases, we can transfer your existing UK business telephone number to MIH VoIP, allowing you to keep the number your customers already know.
There is no additional charge for transferring your number to MIH VoIP.
Q: What happens if my business internet goes down?
A: Your MIH VoIP service isn’t tied to one internet connection. If your business broadband goes down, Users can continue to make and receive calls using the VoIP App over mobile data or another available internet connection.
We can also configure call diversion to another telephone or mobile number, helping keep your business reachable if your usual internet connection is unavailable.
Q: Is VoIP reliable enough for business use?
A: Yes. VoIP is widely used for business telephony across the UK. A reliable internet connection is important, and we’ll help you choose a setup appropriate for how your business operates.
Q: Can staff transfer calls between each other?
A: Yes. Users can call and transfer calls between each other using their internal extension numbers. MIH VoIP also supports features including call groups, call routing, voicemail and voicemail-to-email.
Q: Do I need to buy a VoIP desk phone?
A: No. You can make and receive calls using our VoIP App or Browser Phone without purchasing a desk phone. If you prefer a physical phone, we can supply one pre-configured and ready to use, or we may be able to reuse your existing equipment.
Q: What is a User (Extension)?
A: A User is similar to a traditional telephone extension, but with much more flexibility. Each User can use multiple compatible devices, such as a desk phone, VoIP App and Browser Phone, while retaining their own extension, voicemail and other features.
Q: Can I add or remove Users as my business changes?
A: Yes. Additional Users can be added whenever you need them and are charged pro-rata for the remainder of that month. If a User is no longer required, their licence can be removed at the end of the month.
Q: Can several phones ring when somebody calls our business number?
A: Yes. Calls can be configured to ring multiple Users or devices, either simultaneously or in a sequence, depending on how you want your business calls to be handled.
Q: Can we have different opening hours or call routing?
A: Yes. We can configure your system around your business hours and decide what happens to calls when you’re open, closed or unavailable, including routing calls to different Users or voicemail.
Q: How long does it take to transfer my existing number?
A: Number transfers typically take around 10 business days, although we advise allowing 7–21 business days.
The exact timescale can vary depending on your existing provider and whether any queries, objections or issues arise during the transfer process.
We’ll manage the transfer process for you and keep you updated along the way.
I prefer putting “typically around 10 business days” first because that’s the useful real-world expectation based on your experience, while 7–21 business days establishes the sensible window.
